WHERE DOES CASTOR OIL COME FROM?

Castor oil is extracted from the fruit of the castor tree (also called Ricinus Communis), nicknamed castor bean. However, the castor bean is not actually a legume (Leguminosae) and the castor bean is therefore not an “official bean”. The miracle tree owes its name to the incredible speed at which this plant grows. The castor plant originally comes from East Africa, India and the Southeastern Mediterranean region. This plant ended up in the Caribbean during the slave trade. Here the castor tree now grows everywhere in the tropics.

WHAT IS CASTOR OIL MADE OF?

Castor oil in its purest form is a triglyceride; approximately 90 percent of the composition is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid: ricinoleic acid. This makes castor oil so special of its kind, because ricinoleic acid helps with impurities and balancing the (scalp) skin. In addition, castor oil also contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are very important in hydrating and keeping skin and hair supple.

CENTURIES OF USE OF CASTOR OIL

Castor, or castor oil, has been used for centuries. It was already used by the Egyptians, among others, about 4000 years before Christ. We know this because it has been found in several tombs. But the ancient Greeks also appear to be familiar with castor oil. It had many uses, including medicinal ones, but today we use the castor oil for fuller, firmer hair and smooth skin. It is used pure, or in combination with other natural oils such as coconut oil or lavender oil.
